Together with Ocean Matters, LPM has produced a Digital Humanities program for high schools. A truly innovative and collaborative approach to teaching history at the K-12 level, the program examines the role of whaling on the development of the American economy and culture in the 1800s and early 1900s. Unit 1 provides an introduction to the history of whaling in America. Unit 2 provides a case study in examining how the town of New Bedford was shaped by the whaling industry. Unit 3 provides a guided process for researching the local history of whaling in the towns of participating schools. Students work with primary resources, archives and data visualizations in a program that intertwines economics, the environment, geography and history.
